Toastmasters is a club that's purpose is to help members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.
Yesterday, I was invited by a friend to attend a meeting themed: Looking back at 2010 A fairytale special by the toastmasters. At first I was hesitant to attend the meeting when my friend mentioned that their is going to be an impromptu speaking for the guests who attended the meeting, unfortunately I was informed on the day I was about to attend so there was no time for me to back out. The meeting started 6pm and their were only few people in the room dressed like their in a fantasy world, well not too extravagant costumes but simple ones. Looking around I realize the room was small, that instantly gave me an idea that only few people are going to attend, that made me and my friend nervous because those people might be "experts" in public speaking and this might be a room filled with good English speakers, so talking in front of them would be pretty scary.
So when the program started it all began with greetings, pledges etc., I've learned new vocabulary words, tips on how to stat a impromptu speech and other guidelines that will help create a enthusiastic speech. So I want to share those things I've learned:
Ululate-to howl or wail, in grief or in jubilation
example: The wolves are ululating during a full moon.
Sylvan (adjective)- of forest: relating to, typical of, or found in a forest
example: The fairies are strolling amidst the sylvan.
Gimcrack- showy but shoddily made: showy or superficially appealing, but badly made and worthless
example: The accessories that are sold at the sidewalk is a gimcrack.
We all know that impromptu speaking is important because it affects on a lot of things like job interviews, when we join a beauty pageant, being a politician etc., this is the reason why we should practice our universal language and the way we pronounce the words, but what if we are already good at this verbal stuff? but the only problem is we don't know how to start a speech or we don't know what words to say, It's simple all we have to do is to remember the abbreviation PREP and PREM.
PREP which stands for:
P- Proposition
R- Reason
E-Example
P- Proposition
PREM which stands for:
P-Proposition
R-Reason
E-Example
M-Message
What is a proposition?
A proposition is when you state the idea directly or we could say answering the question that would direct to the "point".
After stating your direct answer followed it by adding reasons to support the main idea and give example so that it would be clear for the listeners on what you are trying to say then end it with another proposition or it can be a message like ending it with "sayings or quotations"
Example:
Question: Why do you love anime?
I love anime because it entertains me. The reason why it entertains me because of the fantasy-reality theme it creates that made it seem real for the viewers, for example when the anime your viewing is dramatic the emotion of the viewer would shift into a sad emotion or a happy one, when its action its seems like your part of the fight, although the characters don't look real, its still makes you feel like its real. This is why I love anime for it entertains me when I'm bored.
Well that's it.
One thing I also like about the Club is that they critique each other in a nice way, they don't discriminate but shares what they learned or knew. As the meeting goes on, my attention was caught up by the amazing speeches the members delivered, Amazing not because they were good at delivering their speeches but amazing because they got me interested.Usually, for me, a speech is boring and is not fun to listen to but this one was different because they added it up with humor and good facial expressions. It was a creative way when they used idioms and simile, It really brought an impact to their speeches. This is what persuaded me wanting to join the club because I had learned a lot and I wanted to be a fluent speaker.I want to be like them.
